Invitation to Attend Nano-Optoelectronic Workshop (NOW)
                                    August 21-23, 2005
                              University of California, Berkeley

Message from Director

On behalf of the Center for Optoelectronic Nanostructured Semiconductor Technologies (CONSRT), I would like to welcome you to the first Nano-Optoelectronic Workshop. As one of centers supported by DARPA’s University Photonic Research Program, CONSRT‘s main objective is to develop advanced nanostructured optoelectronic materials and devices to enable breakthrough functionalities in sensing, imaging, processing and communication microsystems with greatly reduced power, size and weight. The resulting capabilities will create revolutionary impact - enabling ubiquitous and intelligent utonomous platforms for environment; infrastructure monitoring and control devices; massive information acquisition, processing and delivery; and efficient solar energy conversion.

As we stated in the invitation letter, the primary objective of this Workshop is to provide a forum for CONSRT researchers and collaborators to present their latest research in nano-optoelectronic research, as well as a networking platform to bring together researchers and end users of the Nano-Optoelectronic community to develop a more realistic roadmap for future development.

We are excited about not only the technical program but also the ample opportunities for interaction among the participants.  We are particularly honored to host a distinguished group of international delegates from various research institutes, universities, national labs and industry. The rump session debate on “Where is the light going?” will surely bring plenty of food for thought.

We expect exhilarating discussions, invigorating debates and many interesting informal exchanges between researchers, which will hopefully stimulate future collaborations and spark new ideas for technology breakthroughs. We hope your experience with CONSRT’s Workshop will be fruitful and a long lasting one.

We would like to thank all CONSRT professors, students, researchers, Technical Advisory Board members and invited guests for their participation and contribution to this workshop. We want to acknowledge the generous support from Dr. Waguih Ishak of Agilent Technologies, our Corporate Member, for the support of the Best Poster Award.  Finally, we thank the support of the Industry-University Corporative Research Program and the UC Discovery Grants.

Some say the future cannot be predicted.  However, we believe we can build our future our way – by working diligently in concert towards a common goal.  The prospects and promises of nano-opto are limited only by our imagination.

Invitation and call for participation
CONSRT invites you to attend the first Nano-Opto Workshop (NOW), featuring internationally renowned scientific and industrial leaders as speakers to provide a panoramic view of the latest ground-breaking advances in nano-optoelectronic materials, devices and applications. Ample time for interaction and in-depth discussions will be available through student poster presentations, an evening rump session, a team-building wine-tasting tour and a gala dinner in Napa Valley.

Workshop Scope
This Workshop is to provide a forum to present the latest progress in nano-optoelectronic materials and devices research performed in CONSRT, as well as a networking platform to bring together researchers of nano-opto community.  Five distinguished invited speakers will discuss nano-opto research funded by DARPA, recent advances of quantum dots research in Europe and Japan, and possible bio/medial applications.  A panel of eminent scientists and industry leaders will lead in the discussion of “where is the light going?”, hopefully offering plenty of food for thought.
The CONSRT professors will present tutorial-style talks providing broad overviews of their research in the nano-opto area, rather than limited to that funded by the DARPA University Photonics Research Program.  The CONSRT students will present posters at the Workshop. The program is designed to provide ample time for in-depth discussion.  A team-building wine-tasting tour is schedule for Monday afternoon, followed by a gala dinner in a renowned gourmet restaurant in Napa Valley.
The topics include, but not limited to, the following:
  •  Nanostructured materials synthesis, physics, characterization and theory of quantum dots (QD), nanowires,   nanotubes and ZnO quantum wells.
  •  Advances in physics, design, modeling, fabrication and characterization of ultrahigh speed VCSEL, QD lasers, mode-locked lasers, and ultrahigh Q resonators.
  •  Physics and application of ultraslow light and coherent phenomenon.
We expect exciting discussions, invigorating debates and many interacting opportunities, which hopefully will stimulate future collaboration possibilities and spark a few new ideas for future breakthroughs.
We sincerely wish you will join us in this special event!
